What is it ?

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is an assisted reproduction treatment in which the fertilization of the egg occurs outside the uterus. This procedure is conducted in a laboratory setting utilizing various techniques to circumvent surgical intervention. 

IVF is used when there are problems with the fallopian tubes, few available eggs, or conditions that affect ovarian function. It is also used when there is a low presence of sperm in the semen or when its quality is not sufficient for natural fertilization.

Phases of treatment

  • The first step is ovarian stimulation, which involves administering hormones to ensure that all eggs reach their final maturation stage to be released during ovulation.
  • Then, the eggs are retrieved through a follicular puncture, a surgical procedure in which the ovarian follicles are punctured, and their contents are aspirated for analysis in the laboratory.
  • The semen sample obtained undergoes a process to eliminate poor-quality sperm and seminal plasma.
  • Next comes fertilization, i.e., the fusion of the egg and sperm; this can be done traditionally or through techniques like ICSI or PICSI, which involve the specific selection of sperm for introduction.
  • Finally, the embryo with the highest implantation potential is selected to achieve pregnancy.
